North East Writers
RSS News Feed
The North East Writers website now provides the news feed formerly hosted by Wordfringe.
This news feed covers events and other items of interest to writers and those in
the North-East of Scotland who appreciate the written and spoken word in all its
forms, including poetry, fiction, drama, storytelling, comedy and collaborations
with other artforms.
If you are unfamiliar with terms such as news feed and RSS, don't
let the jargon put you off. The concept is simple, and it really is straightforward
to use.
If you have ever missed a literary event because you didn't know about it, then
this news feed could be for you. Yes, the event was listed on the North East Writers
calendar, but you hadn't checked the website for a few days — you've got more
important things to do with your time.
RSS allows you to keep track of all the things you are interested in — the
latest news headlines, radio and TV listings, literary events, social gossip, whatever
you choose — by looking in just one place. It's entirely up to you where that
one place is. It could be in Microsoft Outlook alongside your regular emails,
or with your "Favorites" in Internet Explorer 7 or "Live Bookmarks" in Mozilla
Firefox, or perhaps on your blog or MySpace or Facebook page,
or even on the Google front page. You choose somewhere that you already check
on a regular basis.
You subscribe to the RSS news feeds you are interested in, and up-to-date notifications
from all the different sources are aggregated in the one place. Exactly how you
subscribe depends on where you want to receive the notifications, but here are a
few examples:
- In browsers such as Internet Explorer 8 or Firefox you simply browse
to the feed page or click on the RSS icon:
- In Microsoft Outlook you select Tools | Account Settings | RSS Feeds | New...
and when prompted for the location of the feed enter:
http://www.northeastwriters.co.uk/rss.xml
- You can add the North East Writers feed to Google by clicking here:
Get into the habit of looking for the orange RSS icon on other websites you visit
regularly to see if they offer news feeds. Some will offer many different feeds,
e.g. the BBC News website offers feeds for Headlines, Health,
Education, Politics &c. as well as for many geographical areas.
For the time being at least, the North East Writers website just offers a single
feed, covering events and other items of literary interest. A particular use for
the feed will be for notifications of last minute changes to events or cancellations.
Don't be afraid to try subscribing to lots of different feeds — you can always
unsubscribe from any you decide are delivering too many notifications, or which
are not of interest to you.
